The True Story of Santa Claus begins with Saint Nicholas who is called the Wonder-worker. Saint Nicholas was born during the third century in the village of Patara, in Lycia, province of Asia Minor. At the time, the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey.

He was the only son of wealthy Christian parents who raised him to be a devout Christian after God had answered their prayers for many years to have a child. He was very religious from an early age and it is said that he kept the canonical fasts of Wednesdays and Fridays since he was a baby. His wealthy parents died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Then he was raised by his uncle also named Nicholas, who is the bishop of Patara and guarded declared his uncle in a vision that this boy would be a man of God who leads his church.

Obeying Jesus’s words, if you want to be perfect go so what you have and give to the poor and you will have a treasure in heaven and come follow me. Nicholas uses this whole inheritance after the departure of his parents to help the needy, the sick and the suffering. He grew up and became a monk and then he was ordained as a priest when he was 19 years old. After the departure of the Bishop John, the Archbishop of Myra, the Bishop’s started thinking of the coming Bishop of the province.

While they were praying for that, the angel of the Lord appeared to one of them telling him to go to the church and to stand at the door and the first one who would enter his name would be Nicholas. He would be the next chosen Archbishop of Myra. So, the elder Bishop came to him and asked him for his name and found that he was Nicholas. He was ordained as an Archbishop among the joy and celebration of the people. However, he had humbly tried to refuse that nomination. He became known for his extraordinary piety zeal. His generosity to those who are in need, his love for children, and many astonishing miracles.

Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian who ruthlessly persecuted Christians Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith was exiled and imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons. There was no room for the real criminals, murderers, thieves, and robbers. But he kept preaching with the name of Jesus Christ to the prisoners inside the prison and gave strength to other Christians who were imprisoned with him.

Later, after the Roman Emperor Constantine had beaten Diocletian and officially ended the persecution of Christians there. Bishop Nicholas was released and then he attended the Council of Nicaea in 325 and he was a staunch, anti-area nism, and the fender or the Orthodox Christian Creed against the heresy of areas. He departed on December the 6th 343 and was buried in his Cathedral Church in Myra dem Turkey till the year 1089. As it was transferred to Bari in Italy were unique relic called Magna formed in his grave. This liquid substance said to have healing powers fostered the growth of devotion to seeing Nicholas.

The anniversary of his departure became a day of celebration called Saint Nicholas Day on the 6th of December. The Coptic Orthodox churches celebrate his anniversary on the 19th of December, the 10th month of chaos every year. I guess it could be South Nicholas body is located in Bari Italy. His body is enclosed place so that God appears the honors of that st. where a unique white liquid called manna. It has a part of the church in Egypt which comes from Bari. That liquid or manna makes many miracles by the intercession of Saint Nicholas. One from Saint Nicholas titles he is the intercessor of the sailors.

If you travel by Western ship, you will find in the room of the captain an icon for Saint Nicholas as he is the intercessor of the sailors. Because he had a miracle of saving them from sinking also, he is the intercessor of the oppressed people. And he is called the Wonder worker for the many miracles he did by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Through the centuries, many stories have been told of st. Nicholas’s life and deeds. One of these stories tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman’s father had to offer prospective husbands something of value a dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the change that a young woman would find the good husband. This poor man’s daughters without dearies were therefore destined to be sold into slavery. When st. Nicholas knew about the poor man and his daughters.

He went and put a bag of gold at the window of their home providing the needed galleries. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings are putting up shoes eagerly awaiting gifts from seeing Nicholas. Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. That is why three gold balls sometimes represented as oranges are one of the symbols for st. Nicholas and the Christmas tree.  So, st. Nicholas is a gift giver and that’s why children used to wait for his gifts

Several stories tell of st. Nicholas and the see when he was young Nicholas sought a holy by making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. There as he walked where Jesus walked he sought to more deeply experience Jesus’s life, passion, and resurrection. Returning by sea, a mighty storm threatened directorship. Nicholas calmly prayed the terrified sailors were amazed when the wind and waves suddenly calmed.  So st. Nicholas is the patron and the intercessor of sailors and voyages until now.

The centuries Saint Nicholas has continued to be venerated by Catholics and Orthodox and honored by Protestants. By his example of generosity to those in need especially children, Saint Nicholas continues to be a model for the compassionate life.

It could be repentance a good deed, or a promise for the new year.
